ExperienceI spent close to half a year, tutoring and providing general aid to children of all types inside the Boys and Girl's Club of America
I also work as a part time librarian that occasionally works with children by starting conversations about books and literature. This positions allows me to encourages young students to read more by offering my services as a resource.
Beginning this summer, I will also be joining in weekly reading sessions that encourage literacy in children, allows for the development of imagination and promotes the importance of story telling in our culture.
This year will also mark my second year as a volunteer/counselor for children apart of a weekly Poetry Camp housed by JMU.
Being a tutor allows me to not only (and I hope this is possible!) pass on any of the compelling joys reading and writing gifts me with each day, but to see a student take part in the conversation through reading and writing is one of the biggest "reasons why" for tutoring. Reading and writing is a communal act that involves the sharing of ideas, the revisions, the changes and reformulations just as much as it is a solitary act that involves being alone, prying one's brain and plucking away on the keyboard into late hours of the morning.
HobbiesI spend a large chunk of my day reading and writing. But when I'm not tangled in those loves, I'm usually playing my drums and performing with the musical group I play and record with.
I also love fishing, cooking delicious food, hiking, camping and just general time spent outside in the great Mother Nature.
